George is the capital city and geographical hub of the Garden Route
George is favourably situated in a picturesque environment on a coastal plateau between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean - resulting in a temperate climate throughout the year. The George district is the only area suitable for growing hops in South Africa and produces more than half the hops required by South Africa's beer brewers. (Overseas tourists are urged to visit South Africa during the off-peak season as there are quiet beaches, shorter queues at certain attractions, an increase in the availability of tourist guides, and there is a relaxed atmosphere.) George is also fortunate to have two of South Africa's top 10 golf courses as well as numerous other excellent sports facilities.

George is a major business centre catering for the Greater Southern Cape region and therefore has a superior infrastructure with all facilities and excellent air, road, coach bus and even rail links to other major centres. Yet the town has a peaceful, quiet and safe country atmosphere, which makes it the ideal getaway destination.
