Places To See


 

  • Private Game Reserve In the Area
    Blessed with a great diversity of habitat and wildlife, visitors have an excellent chance of experiencing close encounters with rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, giraffe, rare black impala, sable, kudu, nyala, bushbuck, bontebuck, waterbuck, bluewildebeest, eland etc. in an exhilarating 3 hour game drive, either early mornings or afternoons!  With a wide variety of birdlife, including wetland birds, it is also a birdwatcher's paradise.

  • Victoria Bay
    A small bay with only 12 houses on the edge of the ocean, visited by travelers who never leave disappointed. Excellent winter weather that lends itself to superb whale and dolphin watching. Bathing, fishing, snorkeling, surfing and trailing are at your doorstep during the beautiful summer weather.

  • Herolds Bay
    A natural beauty spot just 18km southwest of George, Herolds Bay is a favorite with the locals for both swimming and fishing. The beach offers protected sea bathing and safe tidal pools for the youngsters. The rock pools are rich in marine life and provide hours of fascinating exploring. The walks along the cliff tops provide good vantage points for whale and dolphin spotting, as well as fine examples of coastal fynbos.

      

  • Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park
    The park was proclaimed on 4th December 1964 to protect the coastal forest vegetation and adjoining
    marine environment, it covers 64 000 ha. The famous 'Otter Trail' begins at the park, covering 48km and finishing 5 days later in Natures Valley. The park also boasts some of the most beautiful scenery as well as hikes and board walk hikes.

  • The Swartberg Pass
    The awe-inspiring Swartberg Pass, engineered by the great road builder, Thomas Bain, built between 1882 and 1888. The pass rises to 1,585m above sea level at its highest point, 'Die Top'. The great Swartberg Mountains are made up of folded Table Mountain Sand Stone with an underlay of limestone. The Cango
    Cave System is only one of twenty-three known caves in the range. The range is very rich in indigenous
    flora as well as breath taking rock formations.

  • Knysna Area
    "Where the woods and the waters meet" - one of the Khoi interpretations of the name Knysna. Knysna
    came into being when the villages Mellville and Newhaven were combined in 1881. Wooden products and handcrafted furniture, arts and crafts, scenic experiences, cruises, history museums and restaurants provide
    a seemingly endless choice of activity for visitors. Every tourist coming to Knysna, must visit the 'Knysna Heads', which are sandstone headlands, supported on either side by enormous sand-dunes, enclosing the Knysna 'lagoon'. This 230m gap provides some of the most dangerous sailing waters on the South African coastline.

  • Oudtshoorn Area
    Cango Wildlife Ranch Cango Wildlife Ranch is just like the name says: a ranch, where most of the animals
    are free to roam in their natural habitat. Cango Wildlife Ranch is internationally recognized for its far-reaching conservation efforts, and are the leading breeders of cheetah in Africa, and one of the largest in the world. Guests may explore the scenic beauty of the Ranch on board their very own mini train!

      


  • Ostrich Farms
    Oudtshoorn is considered to be the ostrich capital of the world and there are four ostrich show farms in the area which one can visit. Safari - and Highgate Ostrich Show Farms are en route to Mossel Bay; Oudtshoorn and Cango Ostrich Farms are en route to the Cango Caves. At Safari, the homestead, "Welgeluk", is a national monument. There are daily tours which include ostrich racing and riding.

  • Cango Caves
    One of the world's natural wonders, situated 30km from Oudtshoorn, is the world famous Cango Caves. Conservation of the caves got a big boost with the implementation of a new tour system. Not only does this promote excellent service to the visiting tourist because of the number of tour options, accompanied by the limited number of people, but will also ease the pressure on the most sensitive parts of the cave.


      

  • The Outeniqua Railway Museum
    This is the only National Railway Museum in South Africa. Housed in the old PC shed in George, the Museum is under one roof with four railway lines running into the museum.

  • Hiking Trails
    There are over thirteen different hiking trails for guests to enjoy. Some trails, like the Garden Route Dam trail take approximately 1,5 hours, and other trails, for example the Tierkop trail, can take up to 2 days to
    complete! Trails take you through a variety of habitats, plantations, indigenous forest, fynbos, across
    beautiful mountain streams, and much more. Some trails also offer mountain bike rides or horse-riding trails.

  • HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

    The George Museum
    The George Museum at the top of York Street was the old Drostdy or magistrate's court built in 1811 and occupied by Adrian van Kervel, first magistrate of George. It burnt down in 1826 and was rebuilt as a private home. After additions, it became the Victoria Hotel.

    The Arts Theatre
    The Arts Theatre, designed in Neo Cape Dutch style by architect Charles Bullock, was built in 1905 for Miss Christina van Niekerk's First Class School for Girls which became one of the biggest girls' schools in the country. The Arts Society acquired the building in 1976.

    St Peter and St Paul Roman Catholic Church
    Completed in 1843, St Peter and St Paul Roman Catholic Church in Meade Street is the oldest Catholic
    church in South Africa. The altar is made of Italian marble. Next to it is the Centenary Town Hall built in 1911
    in the Neo-Baroque style to mark the 100th anniversary of the town's founding. While it still serves as
    municipal offices, the modern Civic Centre across York Street has been the home of the municipality since 1964. The three buildings symbolise the birth, growth and maturity of the town.





  • Dutch Reformed Church
    Taken into use in 1842, after taking 12 years to complete. The interior contains an enormous amount of yellowwood and stinkwood; the main door is made of teak. In 1905 the steeple collapsed and extensive reconstruction took place in 1906. The church is a National Monument.
